Switching Usenet Traffic Ports
In internet terminology, a port is a specific number used to route traffic to a particular program. By switching the ports used for Usenet traffic, you can possibly circumvent bottlenecks that have been intentionally imposed. Note that changing ports may not help in situations where the bottleneck is unintentional (a service outage due to hardware failure, for example).
Standard/Non-Encrypted Usenet Access Accounts
The default port for non-encrypted Usenet traffic is 119. Giganews also allows this traffic on ports 23 and 80.
Accounts with Encrypted Usenet™ Access
For SSL encrypted Usenet access, traffic is carried by default over port 563. Giganews also offers port 443 as an alternative for encrypted Usenet traffic.
