AUSTIN, TEXAS—January 22, 2010—Giganews, the world's largest and most trusted Usenet provider for more than a decade, and Data Foundry, a leading, global provider of data center outsourcing, managed data centers, and disaster recovery services, will host 2010's first North American Network Operators' Group (NANOG) meeting in support of the non-profit organization's mission to identify and solve problems that arise in operating and growing the Internet.
The 48th NANOG meeting (NANOG48) will be held in Austin, Texas, February 21-24, 2010 at the Hilton Austin. NANOG48 marks the first time the group meets in Austin.
Senior network engineers, operators, and researchers from companies like Giganews, Google (GOOG), Equinix (EQIX), Akamai (AKAM), tw telecom (TWTC), Comcast (CMCSA/CMCSK), and many others, will present, debate, and discuss technology already deployed or soon-to-be deployed in the Internet. NANOG is a relatively small contingent of Internet insiders from Tier 1 and Tier 2 Internet service providers (ISPs), as well as others connected to ISP networking.
"Giganews' involvement in NANOG48 is a direct extension of our absolute commitment to providing the highest level of connectivity, throughput and security for our customers," says Philip Molter, Giganews' Chief Technology Officer. "We've chosen to host this meeting, because, as a major network traffic source for tens of millions of people, we want to foster the continued growth of the Internet as an open—unlimited platform."
Topics to be addressed at NANOG48 span the latest operational issues, including large-scale backbone operations; ISP coordination; traffic engineering; applications of new protocols, specifically Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6); routing policy specification; queue management and congestion; routing scalability; caching; and inter-provider security; to name a few.
"Data Foundry and Giganews—as early pioneers in the Internet space, as well as current innovators, are uniquely appropriate as hosts of discussions and debates that will greatly influence the future of the Internet," says Betty Burke, NANOG Program Manager. "Contrary to popular belief, the Internet doesn't run itself. A lot goes on behind the scenes. It takes the generous efforts and profound insights of those closest to the technology, companies like Giganews and Data Foundry, for example, to keep this dynamic, global resource in working order."
NANOG meetings are held three times a year throughout the country. NANOG is an activity of Merit Network, a non-profit corporation owned and governed by Michigan's public universities. Since 1966, Merit hasoperated America's longest-running regional research and education network and has coordinated NANOG meetings since 1994.
