New Giganews Control Panel launched!

We released an update to the Giganews customer control panel today. The control panel is your personal web interface for managing all your Giganews services and personal account information. We completely redesigned the control panel to give it a more simple layout that will hopefully be easier for Giganews members to use.

One of the more powerful new features is the ability view and disconnect active VyprVPN connections. For example, if your home computer is actively connected to VyprVPN and you need to use VyprVPN on your mobile device, you can login into the Giganews control panel and disconnect VyprVPN for your home computer and now access VyprVPN using your mobile device. Below is a quick summary of the updates to the control panel.

Today, we are launching a new WebDAV Setup page to supply Giganews members with more WebDAV configuration options with Dump Truck online storage. We recently announced that all Diamond Giganews memberships were upgraded to include 30 Gigabytes of Dump Truck online storage at no additional cost and all other accounts would receive 5 Gigabytes of free storage. Giganews members asked for more WebDAV configuration options, and today we are happy to provide them.

What is WebDAV?

WebDAV Support Launched For Dump Truck

Today, we are pleased to announce that Golden Frog has launched WebDAV support for Dump Truck! WebDAV is a protocol that allows you to use Mac OS X Finder, Windows Explorer or 3rd party desktop and mobile applications to access your Dump Truck as a drive or folder. WebDAV support allows access to Dump Truck from your desktop or mobile device without logging into a web browser.

Golden Frog is proud to announce more improvements to the Mimo Usenet Browser user interface. The user interface was updated to create a more intuitive Usenet browsing experience. This update is the latest of our iterative releases to improve the user interface.

Some highlights of the Mimo v0.2.4 update include a new Header Control Bar design that allows for a more flexible header selection and more detailed information about headers.

Mimo User Interface Improvements - Beta v0.2.3 for Diamond Members

We are pleased once again to announce the latest beta release of the Mimo Usenet browser. Download the free update now. This release continues the "look and feel" user interface updates along with select bug fixes and new feature improvements.

The new Mimo User Interface becomes more visible with this release. In particular, version 0.2.3 introduces the Action Bar, a more consistent place to access common commands. The Action Bar adapts to the content on the current tab in Mimo, variously presenting controls to open newsgroups in new tabs, download selected articles, Reply to or Forward an existing post, manage downloading message headers in newsgroups, and control your download queue.

We also updated the Search and Filter bars, refined the styles and colors, and included a more consistent appearance for tabs and other interactive elements.

Mimo is starting to feel like a new application, but we are far from finished with the user interface overhaul. The Golden Frog development team is continuing to implement more of planned user interface improvements to make Mimo even easier to use. In upcoming releases, look for updates to how Mimo presents images and thumbnails, additional filtering, and more details on active downloads.

What's New in v0.2.2
We are pleased to announce the next beta release of the Mimo Usenet Browser. Download the free update now. The primary changes in this release focused on two key areas:

Bug fixes and performance improvements: This new release specifically targeted some the performance of the newly overhauled internal engine of the last couple releases. You can now download large amounts of newsgroup information without running Mimo out of memory.

First glimpse of the new User Interface (UI): Our new sidebar for downloads and group bookmarks is debuting in this release of Mimo. We’re excited to start coding the newly designed UI.

Mimo’s New UI
Last year we asked our UI designers to focus on making Mimo even easier to use. And now that we have Mimo’s internal engine optimized, a team of our developers are switching their focus to the UI. But don’t worry, our core team will still be working on implementing new features, bug fixes, and performance enhancements.

Due to our iterative development process, we are able to release updates more frequently. We do this so our users can take advantage of our latest development efforts and provide us with faster feedback. The UI work will follow this iterative method as we release new bits of the new UI as we finish them.

It’s important to note this frequent release schedule will often cause parts of the UI to be in a “functional” state, but not necessarily a “final” state. Mimo is still beta, and we are walking around here with hard hats on.

Golden Frog is excited to release Mimo Beta v0.2.1 for Giganews Diamond members. The Golden Frog Dev team has fixed many known and reported bugs in the new download engine resulting in increased stability and speed.

The biggest change in v0.2.1 Beta is how Mimo processes and stores Usenet headers for newsgroups. Below are some the major improvements:
Increased header download speed resulting in improved speed with browsing newsgroups
Initial group population is four times faster
Fixed several hangs and download errors
Improved image handling and header retrieval
Fixed several connectivity and startup issues

On May 2nd, we will become the first Usenet provider in the world to store 1000 days of binary Usenet retention. To celebrate this milestone, we announced the Giganews 1000 Days Prize Giveaway last week.

As part of the 1000 Days celebration, we asked customers to "Salute Giganews" by telling us what they like about our service or why they think we are the best.

I'd like to start by saying that I work as the technical operations coordinator for a high-speed fiberoptic ISP. We deliver lines up to 400mbit/400mbit using FTTH technology. To our corporate customers we can deliver 1000mbit/1000mbit lines. In april we will be delivering what we think is the world’s fastest line, a 100Gbps uplink, to a LAN event with 5000 visitors. I've been invited as staff, and will get a chance to access the uplink when there is little or no traffic on it. In preparing for this trip I started thinking about how much storage space to bring. As much as I can download in the time I'm there, ideally. Normally the bandwidth would give me a good idea of how much I'd be able to get down, but I obviously can't download 12500MB/s. my harddrive can't write that fast! And therein lies the biggest testament to the quality of your service; I'm not worried about whether or not Giganews will be able to handle it, I'm worried about my write speed! No other service in the world approaches this. Your service is simply transcendent, and your employees should be proud to work for the best in the world. Thank you for your continuous excellence.
