What does 2000 days of retention look like?

2000 days = 5.5 years = 48,000 hours = 2,880,000 minutes

  • That means...if you finish 1 medium pizza in 20 minutes, in 2000 days you could eat 144,000 pizzas!

  • That means...after you eat all of those pizzas, if you run a kilometer in 8 minutes, you can run 360,000 kilometers!

  • That means...Giganews has lived through 68 full moons and no werewolf attacks so far. Phew!

But seriously, we store an estimated 25 petabytes of Usenet messages.

There are roughly 45 billion articles stored on our servers and on average, we receive between 450 and 500 articles per second. In fact, in the past 2000 days, 1 exabyte of data has been transferred.

That's incredible!

So what does all this data look like?

25PB = 2.815 x 10^16 bytes = A LOT

The Library of Congress' Web Archive stores about 422 terabytes of data. We store 60 times that amount.

An average 3.5 inch floppy disk (remember those things?) can hold 1.44 MB of data. Put all of the data we are storing onto floppy disks and you'd have 18,641,351,111 floppies.

= 10,000,000 floppies

If we used 500GB hard drives to store our data, we could stack them higher than 8 Empire State Buildings.

Hard Drive's stacked
